STI Testing Options

If you suspect you may have a Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI), it is important that you have a test immediately. Most STI's are easily treatable.

What are my STI Testing options?

1. You can go to your family doctor. He or she will be able to organise a test and treatment if necessary, free of charge. Do not be embarrassed. The doctor and his staff have seen it all before.
2. Go to a GUM (Genito-Urinary Medicine) clinic at your local hospital. Here you will be seen by a doctor or nurse, who will ask you why you think you might have been infected and advise you as to what type of test is appropriate.
3. Postal testing. This is anonymous, fast and efficient.
4. A private clinic. Private medicine is often expensive and you may have to travel some distance to find a clinic. However you will be dealt with in confidence and your face-to-face consultation will provide you with the advice about what to do next.
