What is Vaginitis?

Vaginitis essentially describes an inflammation of the vagina that is often accompanied by an unusual discharge. There are a number of causes, including certain bacteria and yeasts.

What is Bacterial Vaginosis?

Bacterial Vaginosis is caused by a bacterial imbalance in the vagina and this can cause the PH of the vagina to become more alkaline. Women who have bacterial vaginosis will often notice a discharge with a distinctive fishy smell.

Bacterial vaginosis is very easily treated with antibiotics.

What does this test cover?

The GUM Clinic's vaginitis screen looks for the common causes of vaginitis and bacterial vaginosis. It is recommended that STIs (such as Chlamydia) have been ruled out before this test is undertaken.

Here is what the test comprises:

• Trichomoniasis
• Gardnerella Vaginalis
• Candida Species

A microscopy will check for:

• Clue Cells
• White Blood Cells
• Red Blood Cells
• Gonorrhoea

The test also involves a general culture to check for the growth of organisms that would not normally be found in the vagina and may be the cause of the symptoms.

This is a comprehensive check for the possible causes of your symptoms if STIs have been ruled out.
