Ureaplasma Urealyticum/Parvum Information
What is Ureaplasma Urealyticum?
Ureaplasma Urealyticum is a
bacterium that may be picked up from a sexual partner. It is quite common, very contagious and
often has no outward indications. When symptoms do occur, they can include discomfort when
urinating, inflammation and an abnormal genital discharge.
Is there cause for concern with Ureaplasma?
Ureaplasma is now considered to be a naturally occurring organism that does not require treatment.
Is there a test for Ureaplasma?
We can analyse your urine sample or vaginal swab by PCR. If you test positive, we can prescribe
your treatment. Results take 2 working days.
How easy is Ureaplasma Urealyticum to treat?
The latest guidance is that Ureaplsama should not be treated. On rare occasions, a large colony
of Ureaplasma Urealyticum can cause urethritis symptoms. A postive test result in symptomatic
patients MAY indicate that treatment is required, but this should only be done in a specialist
setting. In light of the latest guidance from the British Association on Sexual Health and
HIV, our partner clinic no longer treats Ureaplasma, as the widespread treatment may be
contributing to antimicrobial resistance.
