How does this test work?

You order the test online and we send you a home sampling kit. The kit comprises a really easy-to-use blood collection kit that is specially designed for people to use at home. The blood is extracted using a finger prick and collected in a small chamber. You then send the sample back to our lab in the business reply envelope provided.

When can I get tested?

The HIV test is a fourth generation test - it can detect HIV as early as 10 days after exposure. It can take up to 6 weeks for the HIV to be detectable so if the test is negative and it was less than 6 weeks from the point of exposure when you took the sample, we have to recommend a follow-up test.

Syphilis antibodies are normally detectable within 21 days of exposure.

How long do I have to wait for results?

Results for the HIV/Syphilis test are ready in around 4 hours from the time we receive the sample at the lab.

What happens if the result is positive?

If the HIV test is reactive then we have to refer you for a confirmation test - this is standard procedure for HIV testing.

If the Syphilis result is positive then we do some additional testing to ascertain if this is a past infection that has been treated or a current infection that requires treatment. Treatment is normally delivered by way of an intramuscular injection and we would refer you to a clinic for this administration. There are oral alternatives but they would not be the front line treatment.

How reliable are the results?

The testing that we use is the same as if you were attending a sexual health clinic in person. The only difference is the speed at which we can deliver results is much faster.

Is the service confidential?

No information is ever disclosed to any third party. We are registered under the Data Protection Act. Your details are treated with the same degree of sensitivity and confidentiality, as you would expect from any medical practice.
